Our names are Rosa and Witold Wolkowski, we are married for twenty-five years and have three sons - all born in the USA. Ourselves, we are refugees from Poland. We came to America over twenty years ago. For more than ten years, we can proudly call ourselves citizens of this most wonderful country in the world. We came here during the first term of President's Reagan presidency, actually thanks to him because of the special program for refugees from Poland he created after martial law was proclaimed in Poland. For us, President Reagan will always be a symbol of "our America", and we call him "our President". We always admired and loved him also for his attitude and wisdom. When we became American citizens, we wrote a letter to him thanking him that we can call this country our homeland; we got a response, and we save it as a family treasure. |
| Over twenty years ago, in the airplane taking us to our freedom, somewhere above the Atlantic Ocean, in our hearts full with excitement and gratitude a big dream was born - that some day we will do something good for this hospitable country that let us call her our home, that we will contribute something significant and valuable to the well-being of America and her wonderful, friendly people. | |
| We learned a lot in the USA - as a matter of fact we owe Americans all the most valuable knowledge. We have gone through many courses and seminars - by Tony Robbins, Les Brown, Zig Ziglar; we have read over one hundred fifty books on self-improvement, psychology, philosophy, religion - by authors like Dale Carnegie, Napoleon Hill, David Schwartz, Allen McGinnis, Louise Hay, Norman Vincent Peale, Joseph Murphy, Og Mandino… We realized that our academic knowledge has a very little practical value, and that nobody ever taught us how to live to make our life happy and meaningful. In Poland, nobody was telling about goal setting, about visualization and affirmations, about a power of thought, a power of faith and what a true faith really is. We were thinking that our educational process has been completed the day we graduated from our universities; in America, to our surprise, we realized that this is a never-ending process. Also, we learned that our belief that we are just the way we are and nothing can be done about that, is false, that we can always change and be the way we want to be, that there is always space for improvement and growth. It all was exciting. Of course, we applied this newly gained knowledge in our life and were amazed with the results. Actually, Americans helped us also to find our way to God, although we are from a country that considers itself to be very religious. | |

A few years ago, we went with our three kids for some time to the country of our origin, Poland. We wanted to bring to Polish people American spirit, to teach them about their personal power, about their possibilities and about power of belief. People were hungry for such knowledge: they were following us from city to city, they were coming from different places all over Poland to meet with us and listen to us, also to talk to us and get some advice. It was exciting to witness positive changes in their lives as a result of applying what we taught. We were supposed to stay in Poland one year, but it turned into four long years. We were all missing America so much. We kissed the American ground in LAX when we finally arrived here. And we cannot describe this feeling of joy, happiness and excitement that we are back here. We were like in some kind of amok - it seemed to us that from the time our foot touched the American ground, nothing bad can happen to us and everything good is possible. And that's how it was - because of our tremendously big positive expectancy. |
| After we came back to the USA, we decided that we have to make American people be aware what possibilities they have in this country. Also, we wanted to make them use the knowledge we brought to Polish people from America, to inspire them to really apply in their lives what they mostly already know. This country is founded on these principles; people are exposed to such information almost from the day they are born, everywhere. In contrary to Polish people that were never raised in such atmosphere of encouragement, support, positive thinking and practical information how to apply simple universal rules for their benefit. The fact that we were born in Poland, that we lived here, in USA, and then for some time in post-communist Poland, gave us a unique opportunity to see many things from different angle and to compare. We are very deeply emotionally bounded with America and what we are writing is of great importance to us, and it is very important to us to approach as many American people as possible and to make them benefit as much as possible from all that we learned and what proved to be good for us and for others that applied it. We would like to share with fellow citizens our observations and remarks that are truly important and could help them feel better and live better life. |

| Why do we write together? First of all - we both feel a need to do that. Besides, we have the same or very similar views and opinions about most of the things. Also - people like it, they always loved to see and hear us being together either on the stage, or at the table while personal consulting. | |

The article “What’s going on with American family?” is one of series of articles we are planning to write, all touching subjects that are very important for everybody in this country. We deeply believe that a family is the most important, substantial element of every society. We are the first and the most important teachers of our kids. Everything they learn in a loving, caring atmosphere of their home, they will carry throughout their entire life, and they will pass to their children. That's why, from the very beginning it was our goal to devote as much time as possible to our kids. That was the reason why one of us - Rosa - was working for years as an Apartment manager, to be home with our kids and to spend as much quality time with them as possible. No matter how busy we were, we always found time to talk to our kids whenever they needed either to share with us their joy, or to tell about their problems. Sometimes, because of so called "peer pressure" or "bad environment", all the good stuff our children learned can be suppressed, but - in some critical life moments they will automatically act as they've been taught by the parents (we know that from our family's experience). People were asking us many times what is a secret of the fact that we are so many years together and love and respect each other so much. We believe that this article touches several important issues and that it will make many think about these issues, that it will provoke, initiate some action. |
| If you like our writing and you find it interesting and of some value to others, we invite you to also read the first chapter of our first book. We recently completed and copyrighted the first four chapters of it. This book will be a beginning of the realization of our dream born so many years ago. It will be our way to say "Thank you" to this wonderful country and to the wonderful American people. It will be also a result of countless sincere advice of many Americans that kept repeating to us that we should put our thoughts in form of a book, and that they bet it will be a bestseller. | |

A title of the book is in a form of intriguing and provocative question "Americans, do you know who you are?" - and it has a subtitle "Living under a 'protective glass cover' ". Do Americans know who they really are and how proud they should be of being Americans? September 11 awoke their pride and made them aware how much they love their country, but at the same time it caused lots of confusion: why? Why is USA the most hated country in the world? What is America doing in the frames of a foreign politics, and is what she is doing right? - We do not know if we have all the answers to these questions neither do we know if these answers are all correct and the only ones. That's why, we rather try to present some facts that we know from our experience, and let the readers make their own conclusions. But - there are some things that we are sure about and we will always stand for them. Facts we want Americans to realize. Like this one that there is no other country that cares so much and is always ready to help the others, yet it is so little appreciated by the others. Or that nobody did and does so much for peace and freedom in the world like America. And that no other country in the world gives its people so much of freedom and such practical directions how to use the countless opportunities that it offers; this country encourages people to be dreamers, and at the same time it teaches how they can use their inner power to make their dreams come true.

| All of this will be in the book we invite you to read. It also tells about how our dream the seeds of which were planted way back in our childhood, brought us here, to America. About a full with rocks and thorns, but at the same time exciting path to our dreams coming true. In this book, we want to make Americans realize how wonderful country America is, and how wonderful people Americans are. That they are blessed to be born as Americans, and that the world is blessed to have a country like America. | |
| We want to write several books - this is the first one, but we have an idea for at least two more. The next book that we want to write right after we finish the first one will be about the unbelievable power of belief. In that book, we will give many incredible examples of God's guidance, God's protection and God's help that we experienced personally or people we know did. Many times they seemed like miracles. We know, also from our experience, how much people in tough life situations need examples of God's help - inspiring, encouraging, uplifting stories that bring not just hope, but conviction that everything will be all right. The third book we have to write is about happiness in marriage. You see - many people keep asking us what is a secret of our long lasting marriage, what we do that after over twenty five years of marriage we are so happy together, we respect each other, we are so excited about each other, do everything together and want to enjoy together every single minute of our life. We thought that if people feel such a need for this kind of information (and observing what is going on in today's world with family life, family values and relationships we can see that it is really something crucial) we should share our experience with the others. | |
| If we would make these books reach as many Americans as possible - it would be a beginning of realization of our dream born twenty years ago. Also, it will be an expression of our gratitude to wonderful American people for their hospitality, for their kindness, for their generosity, for their dedication in attempts to preserve peace in the world. |
